About Us
Sherman's Pioneer farm is owned by Dale and Liz Sherman. Dale is a third-generation family farmer whose grandfather began farming on Whidbey Island back in 1900's. In the 1950s, Dale’s father worked with Washington State University and other area farmers, to develop a new variety of squash, the Sugar Hubbard. This squash is a cross between a Sweet Meat Squash and a traditional Blue Hubbard. Deep orange in color with a sweet, delicious taste, it’s quite versatile – great roasted, in soup, stews, muffins and also makes a delicious pie that tastes a bit like pumpkin.

In addition to squash, Dale also grows pumpkins of all kinds.
The farm is open to the public every weekend in October from 10:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. You can either choose your pumpkin from the many that Dale and his family have harvested for you, or you can take a ride on the tractor-drawn trolley to the pumpkin field and pick your own. Either way, it’s a great way to spend the afternoon.
Dale and Liz Sherman’s Pioneer Farm Produce in central Whidbey Island grows the only commercial crop of Sugar Hubbard in the country. They use sustainable growing practices but are not certified organic.

Sherman's Pioneer Farm also owns an onsite, licensed WSDA processing facility in order to cut and package their squash. Processed and packaged produce is known as “value-added” in the industry, meaning that owning and controlling the processing would be a way to increase revenue on otherwise inexpensive raw produce. Investing in an onsite processing facility allows the farm to control every single aspect of production, including saving seeds, planting, monitoring, harvesting, storage, cutting, wrapping and marketing the only Sugar Hubbard crop in existence.
Our Sugar Hubbard is available starting in Mid-October and throughout the fall, winter and spring months!
