About Us
Founder and CEO Efrem Fesaha grew up in Seattle, surrounded by the city's fast-paced coffee culture while his Eritrean family observed something entirely different at home: traditional coffee ceremony, a cornerstone of daily life in Eritrean and Ethiopian households.
In a 2011 trip to Asmara, Eritrea, Efrem's love for East African coffee culture fully took root. He returned inspired by the unhurried warmth of Eritrean cafés — the fragrance of roasting beans, the sense of community, the understanding that coffee is not just a drink, but a daily pause, a reason to gather.
With a background in finance and a heartfelt vision, Efrem set out to bring that tradition to Seattle. He wanted to share not only the distinctive flavors of African coffee, but the spirit behind it.
Coffee can be a catalyst for shared prosperity. That philosophy extends into each of their cafés, in Renton, Capitol Hill, the University District, and the Seattle Waterfront. Rooted in the tradition of East African coffee shops, these are spaces designed to be genuinely welcoming: inclusive of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized communities, and open to local artists, nonprofits, and small businesses through pop-up programming and community events.
Whether you walk through the door or order online, you're not just buying coffee you're joining a community that connects Seattle to the growers, families, and traditions that gave coffee to the world.

Practices
In East Africa, smallholder farms can be as small as a few trees in a family's garden; by championing cooperatives and equitable sourcing, Boon Boona works to ensure a larger share of profits flows back to the people who grow the beans.
Today, Boon Boona, a Seattle -based specialty coffee roaster sourcing ethically and exclusively from Africa ( Ethiopia, Eritrea, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya and others).
Boon Boona builds long-term, sustainable relationships with growers, cooperatives, exporters, and importers, with a particular focus on supporting women-owned farms and reaching underserved coffee-growing regions.
