About Us
Carnation Farms was founded on a vision to enhance dairy quality and animal welfare through improved farming practices. Founded in 1908 by E.A. Stuart, the farm became synonymous with the “Contented Cows” of Carnation Milk, helping shape agricultural practices across the country.

Over the decades, it evolved into a national icon. In 2016, it was reimagined as a nonprofit with a bold new mission: to educate, regenerate, and build a resilient local food system. Today, our history informs everything we do, from how we grow food to how we connect people to the land.

Today, regenerative farming is how we’re building resilience for the future. Through soil-first strategies and place-based experimentation, we grow food that nourishes ecosystems, the community, and the next generation of farmers. Our methods are shaped by weather, seasons, and the floodplain. We build fertility through thoughtful land management, strategic grazing, and continual adaptation, right in Seattle's backyard!

Our regenerative approach integrates animals, honors seasonal rest, and embraces innovation that supports long-term soil health and food system resilience. We regularly test, tweak, and rethink our practices. Adaptation is the point: there is no universal recipe for regeneration, just principles that we tailor through experience.

Our goal is to strike a balance between productivity and regeneration, and to educate the community on our findings.
Practices
Our crops program is a living example of how soil, sustainability, and strategy come together.

Over the years, we’ve narrowed our planting focus from more than 50 crops to a curated group of 15-20, chosen for their adaptability to the Snoqualmie Valley. We use cover crops, crop rotation, and strategic rest cycles to support long-term soil fertility. By growing in harmony with the land, we create a more regenerative and teachable model for future farmers and chefs.

Our livestock program cultivates a relationship between animals and the land that benefits our fields, our farmers, and our food systems. Every animal is raised with respect and given a life that honors its nature, while playing a critical role in our regenerative approach.

We focus on cattle and sheep, each carefully selected and stewarded for their unique contributions to soil fertility, pasture health, and nutrient-dense food. With rotational grazing, breeding for adaptability, and ethical handling practices, our livestock program is built for resilience, just like the land it supports.
