About Us
Here at Holmquist Hazelnut Orchards, we are proud to be a fifth generation farm; family owned and operated. Our story begins in 1905 when John V. Holmquist made his way from Finland to help his father clear wilderness area for farming in Mt. Vernon, WA. On Independence Day of 1909, with vision and keen foresight, John V. Holmquist settled on his own heavily timbered acreage at Judson Lake. Over the course of time, a productive farm developed; raising crops of hay, oats, peas, beans, potatoes, and dairying. During the 1920’s, taking advantage of the rich soil and mild weather of the Northwest, the first hazelnut orchard was planted.
John V. Holmquist was deeply interested in the welfare of the community and was known for his contributions. We continue to honor John Victor and his mission to build relationships within the community, have strong industrial habits, and continue to be a part of local culture. With many generations of hard work and innovative thinking, we are pleased to offer you the highest quality products.
Today, we specialize in several exciting varieties of hazelnut- come and explore our trophy nut “Ennis”, known for its plump appearance and its bold and buttery taste; try our superior and very rare, heirloom variety “DuChilly”. You’ll love the mild, sweet characteristics of this timeless cultivar.
Quality and freshness are the driving factors in the harvest and production of our hazelnuts.
We are a conventional operation, but strive to be environmentally conscious. Synthetic fertilizer and chemicals are used on a limited, as needed basis. Pesticides have not been used in many years. By-products such as the hazelnut shells, empty hazelnuts and husks are recycled into mulch. Our eco-friendly farm supports many wildlife habitats and we strive to be a sustainable operation.
We are WSDA/USDA certified and use GAP/GMP practices. Our hazelnuts are Kosher certified and the raw hazelnuts are GMO free.
We support our local economy whenever possible.
